ADAM RUTLEDGE DIED YESTERDAY

ONE OF ADAM [sic] COUNTY'S BEST KNOWN CITIZENS PASSED

Away at His Home in Paloma Yesterday Afternoon About 5 O'Clock.

Adam Rutledge, a citizen of Adams county for the last sixty-five years, died suddenly yesterday afternoon about 5 o'clock, death coming at his home in Paloma. The cause of his death was heart trouble, which it is thought was brought on by worrying over the illness of his wife, Mrs. Ann Rutledge, who for the past two weeks has been in a critical condition. Mr. Rutledge, however, had been in poor health for several years, due mainly to his advanced years, and the serious illness of his wife hastened the end.

An operation was performed on Mrs. Rutledge last Saturday evening, and since that time some improvement has been observed. Her condition caused her relatives, and particularly her husband, considerable anxiety, who has worried much since she became ill the day before Christmas. Mr. Rutledge, while ill, had been able to be up and about until he was stricken yesterday.

Adam Rutledge was born in Baltimore county, Maryland, and lived there until he was ten years of age, when he came west with his parents and settled in Adams county, where he has since made his home. He was well known throughout the county as one of its most substantial and worthy citizens, and the news of his death will be received with regret by a host of friends.

During his early manhood he became a farmer, which for a number of years he followed with success. At different times he had lived in the vicinity of Clayton, Columbus, Newton and Paloma. About fifteen years ago he retired from active work, and until last summer, when he moved to Paloma, he lived in the village of Columbus.

He is survived by his widow and eight children, who are as follows: Mrs. R. E. McNeall, Mrs. C. B. Cannon; Mrs. Clarence Allen and Derwood Rutledge, all of Quincy; Mrs. P. W. Patterson of Wahpeton, Minn.; Mrs. Roy Fischer of Creede, Colo.; Mrs. W. H. McNeall of Paloma, and Frank Rutledge. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Cecilia Baker of Paloma, Mrs. C. Mary Rutledge of Salina, Kan., and Mrs. Amanda Baker of Joplin, Mo., and fourteen grandchildren.
