Mr. Leonard C. "Sparky" Markowski, age 87, a resident of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center of Manitowoc, died early Monday morning Feb. 11, 2002 at Shady Lane.
A Memorial Mass is scheduled to take place in April at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manitowoc. Inurnment of his cremated remains will take place in Calvary Mausoleum.
Sparky was born Aug. 26, 1914 in Manitowoc, son of the late Henry and Mary Novak Markowski. He attended St. Mary's Catholic grade school in Manitowoc. On May 13, 1936 he married the former Martha R. Grall at St. Paul Catholic Church in Manitowoc. The couple always made their home in Manitowoc, and Martha preceded him in death on June 9, 1997. Sparky was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard serving from 1941 to 1945. Sparky worked at Fischl Dairy as a route salesman serving the northeast side of Manitowoc for 30 years and for Imperial Eastman for nine years before retiring in 1979. Sparky was also a bartender for various establishment for almost 50 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #706 of Manitowoc, an avid bowler a follower of high school sporting events, served for 15 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Football Inc., including season ticket manager for the Manitowoc Chiefs for eight seasons. Sparky was also a member of the Chief's Hall of Fame.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Barbara (Vernon) Rusch Sr. of Pearson, Wis.; two sons and daughters-in-law: Capt. David L., United States Navy, retired (Sandra) Markowski of Virginia Beach, Va.; Dennis (Donna) Markowski of Manitowoc; one brother and sister-in-law: Anton (Pearl) Markowski of Manitowoc; one brother-in-law and four sisters-in-law: Mary Agnes (Roger) Schuh of Sheboygan; Ethel Markowski of Manitowoc; Edna Grall of Manitowoc; Bonnie Grall of Sheboygan; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren: Vernon (Phyllis) Rusch Jr. (Mathew and Taylor) of Brillion; Jacqueline (Jim) Manlick (Philip and Erin) of Green Bay; Pamela (David) Woodson (Francis and Julia) of Bradenton, Fla.; Aimee (Andrew) Markowski Boerst (Cora and Alexis) of Sheboygan; Brett (Amy) Markowski (Kaitlin and Michael) of Francis Creek; Vicki (Derrick) Chamlee (Blake) of Annandale, Va.; Eric (Kimberly) Markowski (Sarah and Alexander) of Virginia Beach, Va.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Joseph"Toby," Henry "Doc," Casimir "Casey," and Victor; three sisters: Susan Levash, Dolores Hetue and Esther Markowski; six brothers-in-law: Milton "Bud" Levash, Ray Hetue, Robert Grall, Harold Grall, Harold Grall and Bernard "Bunny" Grall; four sisters-in-law: Viola Markowski, Rose Markowski, Sylvia Markowski and Ethel Grall.
The date of the funeral Mass and visitation will be announced in April by the Jens Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Sparky's family would like a special thank you expressed to the Shady Lane Nursing Care Center for their care and concern shown to him during his stay there.
