Adrianna Breen Cook is my great grandmother. She is the mother of my maternal grandmother. She was known her entire life as Anna. She was the oldest daughter of Paul K. Breen and Maria Elizabeth Oostdijk and was born in Allendale on August 13, 1891. She was one of six children- 3 girls and 3 boys.

Great grandma was a very social person. Her social life centered around the church. She was involved in many groups at various times. She met and fell in love with Peter Klaas Cook, son of Klaas Cook and Jantje (Jennie) van Dijk. Peter was almost 3 years younger than his bride. They were married in Allendale on June 17, 1917. They welcomed their first child, a girl (and my grandmother) in 1918. Two more children followed, both boys in 1925 and 1928.

Anna is remembered as a wonderful mother and grandmother. My mom remembers her grandmother as a very loving person who loved the Lord and her family. She is "famous" within the family for being an incredible cook.

Anna didn't believe in luck. She believed that everything happened according to the Lord's plan. The bible was the book of all books in her home. I found a paper that she had written many years ago and found the following phrase : ..."therefore the Bible, the book of all books should find first place in our homes. Christ cannot be the Head of any home unless his Word, which is the law of the home, is diligently searched."
She and Pete and family were members of Prospect Park Christian Reformed Church. She was involved in the Ladies Aid, the Mission Society and the Christian School Circle.

Anna was always close to her sister, Nellie. Nellie was married first to Everett Scharphorn, second to John Wigger. Nellie and John Wigger lived right behind great grandma and often times the two couples would do things together. Neither of my great grandparents ever drove a car so if they went a long distance from home, it was usually with a member of their family. My great grandpa used to ride his bicycle to work but that is pretty much the only "vehicle" he owned.

My great grandparents were a wonderful example of Christian love and kindness. My great grandfather had to go to a rest home after he had a stroke and a few years later my great grandmother lived in the same rest home. (Birchwood Manor) I remember visiting her there when I was really young. On one visit I remember her giving me a necklace that she had won playing bingo there at the home. The string broke a long time ago, but I still have those beads. I remember going to visit my grandparents at their summer cottage on Lake Michigan and riding into town to check on great grandma's house. My grandfather always kept her lawn mowed and would plant a garden in her backyard. We would often have fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and other fresh vegetables while we were visiting my grandparents. I remember when my grandfather would mow her lawn, we would often be inside with Grandma. I remember thinking how "museum looking" everything was. Everything had its place and not one thing was out of its place.

Great Grandma Cook died on July 9, 1980. She was buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland, Michigan.
