Dr WILLIAM STANFORD STEVENS was born on 13 June 1859 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts to Dr Calvin Stevens and Sophia Tappan Crocker-Stevens.

William graduated from the Boston Latin School in 1876, earned his Bachelors degree at Harvard in 1880, then his Medical Drgree from Harvard Medical School in 1883, and received a conferred Masters degree from Harvard in 1884. He practiced medicine from 1884 through 1887, but due to health issues resigned from the Medical Practice and turned his focus to Civic and Charitable duties.

He Represented old ward 18 in the Massachusetts Legislature for two years, 1887-1889, and was a member of the Boston Common Council from the same ward in 1891. He served the Merchantile Library of Boston as Treasurer for 5 years and as President for 2 years. He was Superintendent of the St Albans Hospital in Vermont from 1900- 1903, and served the Massachusetts Emergency & Hygenic Association and the Marine Biological Laboratory. He was President of the Northern Telephone Company for 20 years, the Centeral Telephone Company for 10 years, and the Citizen’s Telephone Company for 8 years with devotion to bringing telephone services to rural areas.

He served as a member of civic organizations as well: the Union Club, the Harvard Club, the University Club, the Twentieth Century Club, the Boston City Club, the New England Historic-Genealogical Society (Corresponding Secretary), the Oakley Country Club of Watertown, and the Knight Templar Masons.

William married Emily Huntington Lewis-Stevens on 11 December 1895 at St Albans, Franklin County, Vermont, and they had THREE sons of record:

Stanford Huntington Stevens (1897 – 1974),
Philip Greeley Stevens (1902 – 1993).

William was well traveled, especially with his wife and children including places like Italy, Greece, France, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Bermuda, Egypt, Algeria, and Spain. It is widely documented that the family had homes in Vermont, Massachusetts, and France.

William passed away on 29 April 1916 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, and his remains were shipped by train for him to be interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Saint Albans, Franklin County, Vermont.
