Mabel Irene Shankle, age 62, of Wayland, MO, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 5, 2005 at her home.She was born February 5, 1943 at Granger, MO, a daughter of George and Mabel Otto Mendenhall.She married Wilbur Darby and they were they parents of Loretta and Elizabeth. She latermarried Richard "Cecil" Shankle who preceded her in death.Survivors include two daughters, Loretta Rice and her husband, David, of Richland, IA and Elizabeth Darby and her companion, Jerry Ortega, of Washington, IA; seven grandchildren: Aristonico Rodriguez, Sarina Hotka, Steven Treanor, Brandon Marcella, William Dyer, III, Adam D-Ettore, and Lauren Herron; three great-grandchildren, Asia Aguirre, Kyden Hotka, and Skylynn Rodriguez; four brothers, Larry Mendenhall and his wife, Mary, of Kirksivlle, MO, Joe Mendenhall of Wyaconda, MO, George Mendenhall and his wife, Joy, of Memphis, MO, Tim Mendenhall of Prairieville, LA; five sisters: Mary Lou Greathouse and her husband, Robert, of Osceola, MO, Kathy Hudson and her husband, Robert, of Lancaster, CA, Virginia Mendenhall of Chicago, IL, Martha Roberts of Kahoka, MO, and Sarah Kennedy of Lancaster, CA; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives.She was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, Richard Shankle; one brother, John Mendenhall; and a nephew, Randy Mendenhall.Irene attended schools in Granger and later in Wyaconda. She had been a Certified Nurses Assistant at several nursing home facilities in Iowa, including Washington County Care Center, Mt. Pleasant, and Wellman. She had retired due to ill health and this past year had moved toWayland, MO.Irene attended Granger Presbyterian Church as a youth. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and loved her grandchildren.Following ~cremation~, private memorial services will be held at a later date in Granger (MO) Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
