Preston Eagleson was the son of H. V. and Elizabeth (sic ?) Eagleson. He was born in Mitchell, Indiana, May 4, 1876. He attended the public schools at Bloomfield, and later at Martinsville. In 1889 his parents moved to Bloomington, and in 1892 he graduated from the Bloomington Hish School. He then entered Indiana University, from which he received his Bachelor Degree in 1896. The following year he accepted the principalship of a school in Bloomington, where he taught two years, then resigned to accept a similar position in the Vashon school of St. Louis, Missouri. The year following he reentered Indiana University, and in 1906 received his Master's Degree.
Later he was ordained into the ministry of the A. M. E. church of Spencer, Indiana. This work he carried in conjunction with teaching in the public schools, and under this double burden his health gradually became so impaired that in spite of the best medical service he never fully recovered, and after several years of intermittent mental and physical suffering he was finally released on August 11, 1911.
In 1897 he was married to Ollie Wilson of Spencer, Indiana, and to this union were born three children: Wilson Eagleson, Newland Thomas Eagleson (deceased) and Beuna May Elizabeth Eagleson.
He was Master of Mt. Olive Lodge and Past Noble Father of Monroe Lodge 2531. He later changed his membership to Spencer, Indiana, where he was elected Deputy Grand Master of the State of Indiana.
Those who knew Preston Eagleson through his earlier years of struggle and promise realize that in his misfortune society has lost a valuable citizen, and his race in particular has lost the service and achievement of one of whom they might well have been proud.
