Studied at Washington and Jefferson College at Washington, PA. Graduated from Hanover College in Indiana. He then attended and graduated from the theological department at Princeton. After graduating, he was called to Springfield, Illinois to serve the Portuguese settlement there. This was around 1862. Two years later, he came to Jacksonville and served as Pastor for the Second Portuguese church for three years. He then went to Brazil as a missionary returning to the states in 1886.
On May 11, 1862, he married Miss Martha Dale in Cass county, IL. She was the daughter of Rev. John Dale, of Virginia.
Eight children were born to them, five were living at the time of his death.
One child died as an infant, Mary died in while he was a missionary in Brazil, and Margaret died in 1895. Surviving children: Rev. R. F. Lenington and Miss Effie Lenington, serving as missionaries in Brazil; Rev. George C. Lenington, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Virginia; Mrs. P. A. Bartlett of Detroit, Michigan; and J. Allan Lenington of Jacksonville.
Also survived by a sister, Mrs. Lelah Riggs of Kokomo, Indiana.
