Edwin Hathaway was born on 18 Jan 1832 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY, the eldest of six children to bless the marriage of Benjamin Hathaway and Elizabeth H. Case.

In 1851 he married Miss Elizabeth Russell, the seventh of nine children born to the union of Stephen Russell and Jean Bryce; and the settled in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY.

On 01 Mar 1853, Elizabeth gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Jane Elizabeth Hathaway, but the joy of this event would be short lived. On 21 Mar 1853, Elizabeth would pass from this life, leaving Edwin a widower and Little Jane Elizabeth motherless.

Elizabeth's older sister Jane Leonora Russell, came to take care of the grieving widower and little infant; and in August of that same year, Edwin and Jane Leonora Russell were wed and she raised the infant as her own child.

Jane and Edwin had four children together: Charles Sumner in 1855, Florence Adelaide on 25 Apr 1858, Lois Antoinette in May 1860 and Stephen Russell on 03 Nov 1861.

On 15 Aug 1862 answered the call of his country to defend the Union and enlisted in the great Civil War as a Private in Co A, 144th NYS Volunteer Infantry at Tompkins, Delaware Co, NY.

After the Siege of Norfolk, Virginia he was promoted on 10 Mar 1863 to Full Corporal. He fought bravely at the Bombardment of Fort Sumter and at the Battles of John's Island, Honey Hill and Deveaux Neck.

On 10 Feb 1865 he was wounded at the Battle of James Island and taken to Folly Island Hospital where on 12 Feb 1865, he succumb to his wounds and was buried on Folly Island and later removed to Beaufort National Cemetery.

His widow Jane Leonora never remarried, remaining a widow for forty-eight years, passing on 26 Jun 1913.
