President of Banking Corporation Dies Suddenly at California Home.
ARCHIBALD M. McLACHLEN.
Archibald Malcom McLachlen, nationally known as a banker, financier and largely interested in real estate, president of the McLachlen Banking Corporation, 10th and G streets, northwest, this city, died yesterday at his California home in Los Angeles from a stroke of paralysis, aged 65 years. He had gone to California for rest several months ago. He was accompanied by his wife and son, Robert McLachlen. John M. McLachlen, another son, with apartments in the Ontario, was notified of the death of his father last night by long distance telephone. No announcement has been made as to funeral arrangements.
Born in Geneseo, N. Y.
Mr. McLachlen was a native of Geneseo, N. Y., where he was born in 1857. He was educated at the State Normal school at Ypsilanti, Mich., and the University of Kansas. In his early life he was the postmaster and druggist of the town of Altoona, Wilson county, Kan., and later followed the profession of pharmacist at Thayer, Kan.; Las Vegas, N. Mex., and Denver, Col. In 1881 he came to this city to take a position in the Interior Department and in 1887 he entered the real estate and banking business in Washington and soon took a prominent position in those two fields of activity. He organized and directed the McLachlen Banking Corporation of this city.
He was largely interested in the construction and operation of a number of the larger apartment buildings of this city and held large interests in land development companies. He was treasurer and organizer of the Washington Investment Company, the Ontario and Iowa Apartment House Company, secretary of the Brookland Building Association, treasurer of the National Drainage Congress and a former president of St. Andrew's Society. He was a republican in politics.
Resident for Forty Years.
His home in this city was at 2800 Ontario road. He had been a resident of Washington since he was twenty-five years old. He was an active member of the Washington Board of Trade, being one of the founders of that institution. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Congregational Church.
Several years ago he dedicated to the town of Thayer, Kan., where he formerly resided, the twelve-acre family homestead tract, which is now known as McLachlen Park.
Mr. McLachlen is survived by his widow and five sons, Lanier P., Eugene H. John M., Robert and Archie McLachlen, and five grandchildren and a brother, Josiah W. McLachlen of Chicago.
It is probable that the body will be brought to Washington for interment.
