Malcolm McLachlen migrated from Livingston County, New York to Ypsilanti, Michigan, then to Thayer, Kansas with his wife Julia in about 1875. Malcolm was a merchant who owned drug stores in Kansas, and New Mexico. He finally settled on a farm in Thayer. Malcolm and Julia's farm land was later donated to the town of Thayer by their son Archibald M. Mclachlen and was named McLachlen Park. Malcolm's older sister was Mary McLachlen Ferguson of Thayer. They share the same burial plot.
