He married Filinbina (Rena) Elizabeth Miller on 20 JAN 1885 in LaPorte County, IN.
He farmed all of his life, probably on rented property. He also hired himself out as a woodsman. He was known to us a crosscut saw or an axe for a full day.
In the mid 1890's they lived in a log cabin when a tornado came through and blew the chickens and pigs away, but did not touch the cabin.
On several census records they were living with various of their grown children in their later years.
He loved to fish and loved horses.
His children tell a story of when they walked with Nelson to New Carlisle (about 4 miles). They were tired, hot, dusty, and cranky on the way home. Suddenly, H Nelson announced that he had spied a penny in the roadway and told the children they might be blessed if they could find it. This saved the day, and the group arrived home a happy mood.
One of his grandchildren described him as a short, portly gentleman with a chock of white hair and a white mustache. A man of dignity and high principles. He was pleasant and easy-going with a pragmatic view of life.
He died 9 SEP 1923 in LaPorte County, IN of carcinoma of the liver.
