His name at birth was Cornelius Verkuyl, but his parents "Americanized" it as they were so proud to be American citizens!I don't know if it was legally changed, or not, but he never used Cornelius in any of his records.
He was born in 1895 to Arie and Sieke Verkuyl, who had both come over from Holland. His parents moved the family to Hanford, California from Mississippi before the two youngest children were born.
He married Myrtle Bruce in about 1915, and they had my grandmother( my mom's mother), Harriett in 1916. Unfortunately, their marriage did not last, divorcing in about 1921. Grandpa Corey remarried a few years later, to a dear lady we called Aunt Della. They remained married until his death.
I didn't know him well, as he lived in California, and we lived in Minnesota. But I do remember his beautiful yard, full of the prettiest flowers and fruit trees! And I remember him being a very kindly man. I was told that when I had my daughter(his first great great grandchild), he was so proud! He carried her picture and showed it off everywhere.
He was survived by his wife Della, sister Anne Keefe, daughter Harriett,3 granddaughters, 10 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. (Many more great great grandchildren since he passed away!) His parents, and three brothers, Peter, Clyde, and Joe, all preceded him in death.
