Samuelson, Rose Marie Barnard

At the age of 95, Rose Samuelson died peacefully at Tender Nest Assisted Living on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006.
Rose was born in Turton, S.D., on Sept. 13, 1910, the daughter William and Laura Barnard. Even though she was a preemie and endured a sickly childhood, it's amazing she lived to reach the age of 95. She was the second child, with two sisters and two brothers surviving childhood. Rose's school years mostly were boarding school and she always gave credit to the nuns who took such good care of her and gave her such a firm foundation in the Catholic faith. She graduated from Turton High School, but the family moved to southern Saskatchewan, where they homesteaded in McCord Country.
Upon completing her teacher training in Moose Jaw, she taught in several country schools until her marriage to Chester Samuelson on Sept. 16, 1937.
They moved across the border after their marriage and became part of the Fort Peck Dam Communities. Their first child, Virginia, was born during that time. Working in various locations for several years, in 1948, they finally settled in Billings. Their son, LeRoy (Sam), joined the family after they moved to Billings. Those depression years made life difficult for Rose. LeRoy was lost at sea in 1964, serving as a Navy underwater demolition technician, adding another difficult chapter to Rose's life. Chet died in 1976.
In the 6'0s and '70s, Rose impacted the lives of many youth as she tutored them through school. She also treasured the years she was involved with her church circle and the Legion of Mary, along with her help in the faith formation of children through CCD.
She also treasured having time to "work" her stamp collections and, as her life slowed down, the hundreds of booties she knit for Birthright. She was a devoted lifelong member of Holy Rosary Parish.
A deep appreciation goes out to all those who have attended to Rose's needs during the recent years: communion visits, personal care attention, tender touches, etc. Your loving concern was not unnoticed.
Rose leaves behind her daughter, Virginia; sister Lucy Barnard; granddaughter Lucy (Rodney) Johnson, their sons Kyle and Corey; granddaughter Rena Metcalf and her son Jeremy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chet; son LeRoy (Sam); two brothers; one sister and two other siblings who died in early childhood.
Visitation for Rose will be at Dahl Funeral Chapel, Thursday, Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vigil and funeral mass will both be at Holy Rosary Church. Vigil is 7 p.m. Thursday, and funeral mass is 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18. Rite of Committal will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Holy Rosary Parish.
