Lucy Barnard passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at the age of 96.
Born on April 29, 1921, the youngest of the five surviving children of William and Laura Barnard, she grew up on the Dakota and Saskatchewan prairies. In 1944, she began working for the Moore Dry Dock Company in Oakland, California, then both the Montana and the National Farmers Union. For seven summers she worked in Yellowstone Park, an experience she fondly remembered. In 1960, she joined the Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company where she had a long career as bookkeeper and office manager. Her work took her many places, including Boston, San Jose, Sacramento and Seattle. She enjoyed traveling in her free time and combined it with an avid interest in photography.
Upon retiring in 1981, she moved to Billings, to be near family, and continued her photography and travels. She also found time to volunteer at many places including the visitor's center at the airport, the Saint Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop, St Vincent's hospital where she offered spiritual comfort to many, Global Village and Angela's Piazza.
Lucy was an avid recycler before it became the norm. Though she was dedicated to leaving a small footprint on the earth, her kindness and generosity left a deep and abiding affection in the hearts of many. Her deep devotion sustained her through her many years. The earth has lost a great human being, but heaven has gained one.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, one nephew and two nieces. She is survived by seven nieces and nephews, and numerous grand and great ones.
Vigil Service will be 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, at Westpark Village. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Arrangements are in the care of Dahl Funeral Chapel and memories may be shared at www.dahlfuneralchapel.com.
