Francis Orville Ask, the youngest of ten children, was born to Laurits and Anna (Hanson) Ask on the family farm outside of Gonvick, MN, on April 1, 1923. Weighing only 2 pounds at birth, and not expected to live, he was baptized at home and then again on April 26, 1923 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Gonvick, where he and his family were members. Francis was confirmed on April 24, 1938. He was a graduate of Gonvick High School and went on to earn a bachelor degree in Biology and Philosophy from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, graduating in 1948. It was at Concordia that he met his wife-to-be, Irene Rice. They were united in marriage on Oct. 25, 1948 at Pine Creek Lutheran Church near Roseau.

Francis and Irene were blessed with four children: David, Lyle, Philip and Melanie. As dictated by Francis' work with the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources, Fisheries division, he and Irene lived at various locations throughout the state, including Bagley, Park Rapids, Brainerd, and Glenwood (since 1956).

Francis trusted in his Savior and was a faithful and loving husband and father. He was a longtime member of Glenwood Lutheran Church, where he participated in men’s and couple’s bible studies. He was also a member of Toastmasters and had several hobbies, including flower gardening, golf, sailing, auto mechanics and camping. He was a skilled woodworker, making 84 curved-top trunks in his retirement years, most of which were rosemaled by local artists. Francis was blessed to have traveled to Norway. He enjoyed music and played several instruments including the organ, piano, banjo, guitar and auto harp.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene in November of 2013; a daughter, Melanie Kay Raasch; and all 9 of his siblings, Cora Stolen, Carl Ask, Oscar Ask, Arnold Ask, Arthur Ask, Hazel Ask (in infancy), Hazel Allen, Evelyn Nelson, and Myrtle Segreti.

He is survived by three sons, David and wife Barbara of Glenwood, MN, Lyle and wife Jean from Gettysburg, PA, and Philip and wife Bonnie of Morris, MN; grandchildren Andrew Ask and wife Jenni and their children, Ben, Maggie and Emma of Grantham, NH, Kirsten Mickelsen and husband Victor and their children Brennan and Ethan of Nashville, TN, David Ask Jr. and wife Lisa and their children Parker and Kate of Hendersonville, TN, Matthew Ask and wife Kelly and their children Carter and Kellan of Fargo, ND, Corey Ask and wife Virginia and their son Jason of Shreveport, LA, granddaughter Christina Rogel and husband Joe and daughter Ingrid of Denver, CO; along with numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Francis will be remembered for his friendly, outgoing personality. He loved visiting and interacting with those around him. He was quick to introduce himself, even to total strangers. God bless the memory of Francis O. Ask
