Second child, to live to adulthood, of Anna (Derouin) and Louis Bergeron; Joseph had 12 siblings, they included Ida, Eugene, George, Emil, Albena, Alemina, Viola, Wilfred, and Amelia.

Joseph attended school until he finished the third grade and he could read and write in English. He most likely also spoke French in the home. He grew up in the UP and by the age of 16 was working in a factory.

Joseph married Frances Mazzone on August 7, 1926 in Cook County, Illinois. They went on to have at least three children, Arthur Joseph (born in 1927), Carolina (born in 1929), and Norman James (born in 1937).

Joseph worked in the telephone manufacturing business and lived in the Chicago, Illinois area from about the mid 1920's until at least 1940. By 1950 he had returned to Delta County, Michigan where he owned a gas station and some tourist cottages.
