Born in Canada to Matilda (Leroux) and Wilfred Derouin, Anna was one of the couple's older children. Her siblings included Albina, Joseph, Emil, Henry, Andrew and Anthony.

Anna spoke French exclusively and attended school through the second grade. About 1891 Anna immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen about 1895-6. She might have found work as a housekeeper.

On June 25, 1900 she married Louis Bergeron in Shaffer, Michigan. They had ten to thirteen children Ida, Joe, Eugene, George, Emil, Albena, Alemina, Viola, Wilfred and Amelia. All of the children were born in Michigan where Louis was a farmer.
