Four-car crash kills local man By Mark O'Keefe, Herald-Standard Associate Editor.

One person was killed in a four-car accident around 7 P.M., Thursday on Route 40 near the Jewish Community Center in Uniontown.
Killed was William (Billy) R. Matthews of Leisenring.
One other person, Michelle Dayner of East Millsboro was injured in the accident. She was in stable condition at Uniontown Hospital Thursday night.
The accident occurred at the red light near the intersection of routes 40 and 119.
According to police, several cars were lined up at the red light, in the right-hand lane, going toward the Uniontown Mall. Uniontown police said a car, driven by Matthews, came up the road and hit another vehicle, driven by Dayner, from the rear.
The crash apparently started a chain reaction collision, involving two other cars. Apparently no one was hurt in those accidents. All four vehicles had major damage and three had to be towed from the scene.
Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip Reilly said the cause of death hasn't been determined. He said the investigation is ongoing, noting that an autopsy is scheduled this morning.
Reilly noted that Matthews had a prior heart condition and it's possible that he suffered a heart attack before the crash. He noted that ambulance workers detected no signs of life in Matthews only minutes after the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:05 P.M. by Paul Kondrla, a Fayette deputy coroner.
He added that there were no obvious external injuries, but it's possible that Matthews might have had some major internal injuries.
Reilly added that some eyewitnesses noted that Matthews didn't seem to be aware that the light had changed at a prior intersection. The witnesses also said Matthews was driving fast up the road.
Reiley said there were no skid marks, further indicating that Matthews might have suffered some type of heart attack
Traffic was halted in three lanes of Route 40 until about 8 P.M.Uniontown and South Union firefighters helped in the cleanup effort. Uniontown Ambulance and Cooperative Ambulance responded to the scene.

Billy R. Matthews, 56, of Leisenring, died Thursday in Uniontown as a result of an automobile accident.
He is survived by his wife, Phoebe Bryner Matthews, sons; William Matthews of Uniontown and Bruce Matthews of Pittsburgh, Pa. three daughters, Nancy Bryner of Connellsville, Robin Gerhardt of Smock, and Cynthia Matthews of Uniontown, and one brother, Marvin Matthews of Denver, Colo. sister, Iva Lee Kriest of Aliquippa, Pa. seven grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
