Katherina (Weiss) Walter was born in Bergnersreuth, Bayern, Germany, a small village located near the town of Arzberg, Germany. Her parent's names are unknown. Most of the South Bend, Indiana immigrants during the 1900's came from this area of Germany, with most connected by being related or friends as the area was so small.

Katherina, as the 48 year old widow of Martin Walther, immigrated to the U.S. on the steamship "SS Oder". She arrived in New York on March 12, 1883, along with her daughters Eva and Elisabeth Walter. Her 3 sons, Christoph, John and Daniel were not listed on that voyage. John's obituary states that he came over in 1881 and his brothers probably came over with him at that time, perhaps traveling earlier to settle making it easier for their mother and sister's arrival to a new country.

Katherina's brother, John Daniel Weiss and his wife Barbara also immigrated to South Bend, Indiana. Most likely other members of both Katherina's "Weiss" and her husband's Walter/Walther families also came to the U.S. and probably settled in South Bend, Indiana.

Katherina also went by the names Catharine, Katharine, Kate and Katie.

After witnessing the death of four of her five children, Christoph (1887), Daniel (1889), John (1892) and Elizabeth Troeger (1897) all dying from consumption, Katherina died on March 19, 1898.
