Baumgardner died at St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were held at Rollie Mortuary Chapel in Gallup, NM, with Rev. Clarence Stanfield of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Baumgardner was a 36-year resident of Allison, NM, and a well-known rancher and former miner. He was a member of the United Mine Workers - Local 7777 at the time of his death.

In addition to his wife and children, Baumgardner is survived by 10 grandchildren; sisters Bessie Robertson (Porterville, CA), Verna Caulkins (Albuquerque), Chloe Nelson (Santa Monica, CA), and Virginia Spruill (Ft. Worth), and brothers Charlie and John Baumgardner (both of Cloverdale, CA). He was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
