Born in Frederick County Maryland, Erwin lost his father in the late stages of the Civil War when he was only 8 years old. His mother decided to relocate the family when Erwin was 14 years of age. Marshall County Iowa is where they moved and Erwin would live the rest of his life there.
In 1891 Ernest married Josephine Stehlik, a native of Czechoslovakia and together they had nine children. In his later years Erwin was to become a grandfather and great grandfather many times over, leaving a long list of descendants.
Erwin was a farmer for most of his adult life and he enjoyed the Shelton family reunions that were held in the 1930s to the 1940s being the patriarch of his family line.
