Matthias, Alice Jane

Alice Jane Matthias, 89, resident of the village of Cleveland, passed away quietly on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at Aurora Bay Care Medical Center in Green Bay, after a battle with kidney disease. She was born on January 23, 1927 in Holder, WI., the daughter of the late John and Helen Stiefvater Griesbach. On October 14, 1950, Alice was united in marriage to Willard Matthias. The couple resided in the village of Cleveland. Alice was employed at the Cleveland State Bank until she retired in 1989. She loved to fish, play sheepshead, and many other card games, cook, make desserts, flower gardening, spending time with family and friends at the couple's cottage on Rost Lake, and taking pontoon rides around the lake. She was a lifetime member of the Cleveland VFW Auxiliary, a 50 year volunteer of the Red Cross Blood Bank and a member of the Eastwind Garden Club, Cleveland Historical Society and Cleveland Senior Center. She was also a member of the Holy Trinity Parish. Prior to joining Holy Trinity, she was a communion distributor and member of Christian Mothers at St Wendel Catholic Church in Cleveland. In both parishes she would help with funeral meals and would make sure to bring a dessert. Alice is deeply loved by her husband of 65 years, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, their wives, her great-grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband, Willard of Cleveland; son, Tim (Linda), of Whitelaw; Grandsons, Brad (Sarah) of Merrill and Bryan (Cassie) of Duluth, MN ; and her two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Brady, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Donnie and Gloria Hopf and nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Elmer Silbersack, Delores Engelbrecht, Mary and Eddie Komoroski, Monica and !key Klabunde, Helen and Iry Johnson, Betty and Don Loughrin and her brother John and sister-in-law Betty Griesbach. Also preceding her in death were brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Merlin and Jeanette Matthias, Elroy and Sadie Matthias, Bart and Betty Matthias, Evelyn Kraft, Joe and Dorothy Pitsch and nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in School Hill, WI.. Father Patrick Nelson will be celebrant of the mass. Private family burial rites will follow on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc WI.. Friends may call at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in School Hill on Saturday, August 27,2016 from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service. The Stoltenberg Funeral Chapel in Cleveland is assisting the family with these funeral arrangements. A Memorial fund for Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the National Kidney Foundation has been established in Alice's name.
