Ethel Sigrum Anderson was born on December 9, 1920 the daughter of Bjorn and Ellevina (Guttormson) Anderson in Elfros, Saskatchewan, Canada. As a young girl, her family moved to Milton, ND. In 1938, after graduating from High School in Milton, Ethel lived and worked in Washington, D.C. for several years before returning to North Dakota where she met Albert Stauss, her future husband. Al and Ethel were married in 1941 on the foundation of the home they were building and Ethel remained in that home until her passing. Albert preceded her in death on December 15, 1994. The couple had large celebrations for their 40th and 50th anniversaries.
Ethel and Al raised 7 children, Larry (Virginia), Dale (Cheryl), Lynn (Marjorie), LaRae, Dan, Paula (Jim) Mandel and Tony. Tony preceded her in death. She was an ardent supporter of her children’s various activities and rarely missed a school event or hockey game. The couple maintained two residences in East Grand Forks and Grace Lake, Minnesota where Ethel enjoyed many summer weekends including the current summer
Ethel worked for Avon Corporation as a sales representative and despite having more than a full time job raising a large family, she also achieved one of the highest recognitions in the company, becoming a member of the President’s Club. Ethel was a long standing member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she enjoyed being a participant in Ruth’s Circle as well as various volunteer activities. Her extremely pleasant demeanor and positive outlook no doubt served her well in employment as well as her life. Ethel never complained about anything and was always pleasant and genteel.
Along with her husband, Albert, and son, Tony, Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Bjorn and Ellevina Anderson, her siblings, Gudrun, Ellen, Beatrice, Henry, Alice, Joyce, Elton, and Ruth. She is survived by her four sons and two daughters as well as her 13 grandchildren, Judd, Gina, Scott, Kelly, Jill, Brandy, Jodi, Eric, Nicole, Joey, Reed, Christine, and Courtney along with 30 great-grandchildren.
