Helena Whitehurst
January 16, 1931 - October 4, 2016
Helena Whitehurst, longtime resident of Redlands, passed away peacefully in her sleep early in the morning on October 4, 2016, at Somerford Place after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
Helena was born January 16, 1931, in Hull, Iowa to Peter and Jessie (Kroese) Stienstra. She graduated in 1949 from Hull High School in Hull, Iowa. Her family relocated to Redlands where Helena met Bill Whitehurst, her husband of 61 years prior to his passing in 2014. Helena worked for Pure Gold Citrus Packing Company for a number of years and chose to work at her two sons’ school as the Librarian and Secretary to the Principal for 12 years. Later in her life, Helena worked as a real estate salesperson and assisted with her husband’s real estate brokerage. She was highly involved in the First Congregational Church of Redlands attending regularly, serving as a Deaconess in the church, and singing in the choir. In addition, she donated many hours to supporting Family Service of Redlands and other local family support agencies.
Helena’s love for music manifested itself in many years of singing in varied choirs including the First Congregational Church Choir, the Master Chorale, and the Redlands Feast of Lights. She played the organ in various churches and frequently played the piano for her family. She continued to sing hymns with regularity throughout her life even into her last days.
Helena is survived by her brother Jim, her sons and daughters-in-law, Glen and Linda, Dale and Pam; grandchildren Laura, Kaitlin and Parnell, Megan, Sarah and Mark, Haley, Brenna, Reid; and great-grandchildren, Aaliyah, Baby Fisher, Danielle, Liz.
Helena was a beloved wife, mother, and servant in the community touching the loves of many. Peace is found in knowing that she is in the presence of the Lord.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Emmerson Bartlett Memorial Chapel. The graveside burial service will be Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Family Service Association of Redlands.
