Sophie Pleuss emigrated from Germany at age 1 on the ship Stephani with her parents and brother, Dietrich. The family settled briefly in Cedarburg, WI where her brother Frank was born. The family moved to the town of Newton, Manitowoc WI. where her father established a farm. When Sophie was about 4, her mother died. Her father remarried to a widow with 3 children.
1860 Census includes Sophie's father, Friedrich and stepmother, Mary, with Sophie, Dietrich and Frank plus their stepsiblings Anna, Franceska and John Ludwig plus 2 new half-sisters, Mary and Elizabeth Pleuss.
1864-Sophie was confirmed at St John's Ev Lutheran Church. [Listed as Sophie Margaretha Pleus].
1864- Her brother Dietrich died of illness serving in the Civil War.
By 1868, four more daughters were added to the Pleuss household-Meta, Augusta, Minnie and Harriet.
1870 Census- Sophie was working in Milwaukee as a domestic servant for a steamship captain and his family.
Jun 13, 1872-Sophie and Landolin Harter were married in Milwaukee by a Justice of the Peace.
Six children were born of this marriage. Emma, William, Frank, Mary (died in 1880 , at 7 mo age), George, and Ervin.
When Sophia went to Oconto (mentioned in the newspaper article), she probably was visiting her stepsister, Franceska Ludwig Alt.
Upon the death of both of their parents, the children were placed under the guardianship of Henry Kollage (his wife's brother was married to Sophia's half sister, Minnie Pleuss Roepke of Birnamwood). No other relatives lived in the Milwaukee area. Kolloge was also the administrator of Landolin's will (est in probate court).
Daughter Emma was 18 at the time but considered a minor by the courts. She married in 1899 and lived in Manitowoc and Birnamwood.
Son William,17, died within a year of his parent's deaths. Cause unknown. No grave found.
Frank,14, and George,9, were in Birnamwood in Jan 1893 at the home of Sophia's half-sister, Minnie Roepke. Later, Frank worked in the Roepke Hardware Store.
Son Erwin,2, lived at the Delavan School for the Deaf for a period of time.
Had Sophie chosen differently, she and Landolin might have lived to see their 11 grandchildren.
