He was born September 13, 1926 in Hector, Clay County, KY to Tilford and Chelsie Depew Bowling. On December 3, 1944, he was married in Covington, KY to the former Bessie L. Chaney who died June 25, 2004. He had previously lived in College Corner, OH and Youngstown, OH before moving to Connersville. He had been employed as a carpenter throughout his life and constructed the lodge at Hueston Woods near Oxford, OH. In 1981, he retired from the E.H. Duncan Company, Poland, OH. Following retirement, he and his brothers continued as carpenters and were known as "The Over the Hill Gang". He was a member of the Baptist church and loved bluegrass music, playing the guitar and golf.
Survivors include three daughters and their spouses: Barbara Louise and Duane Dennis of Ocala, FL; Brenda Joyce DeVaughn of Connersville; Cledith Lee and Rick Stroup of Lordstown, OH; two sons and their spouses: Virgil Duane and Alsion Bowling of Huntsville, AL; Paul David and Betty Bowling of Connersville; five sisters: Cledith Kinder of Durham, NC ; Ida Lintner of Belleview, FL; Neva Long of College Corner, OH; Diana Anderson of Monroe, MI; Martha Ann Robbins of Lasalle, MI; seven brothers: Kelly Bowling of Milroy; Shelby Bowling of Richmond; Roy Bowling of Villa Ricca, GA; Strother Bowling of Connersville; David Bowling of Mendon, OH; Tilford Bowling of Liberty; Tilman Bowling of Hampton, VA; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
His parents, wife, a son: Jerry Lynn Bowling, who died January 26, 1962; two infant brothers: Robert Lee Bowling and Gary Curtis Bowling preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Baker Chapel, College Corner, OH with Rev. Mick Miller of the College Corner United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the College Corner Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.
