Jemima McKinley, a native of Indiana born in c.1821, married Michael Hale (1819-1879). While living in Clark County, Indiana, six children were born to them: Milton, Etta A., Sarah, John, Elias and Della. In 1852, the family set off from McDonough Co., Illinois with extended family members for the Oregon Territory. Per Stephanie Flora's informative website, https://www.oregonpioneers.com/ortrail.htm, 1852 was to be known as the year of sickness and death for both humans and animals alike. Jemima and Della both died from cholera and were most likely buried off of the Oregon Trail in unmarked graves to keep both humans and wild animals from desecrating their graves. It is believed that they both died while the party, under the guidance of Cpt. Calvin T. Hales, was crossing the Plains.
