NEW BERN | On Monday, January 23rd, just five days after her 88th birthday, Agnes Barrow Brock departed this earth to reunite with her Maker and loved ones who have passed before. A service of remembrance will be held Wednesday, January 25th at 10:30 a.m. at West New Bern Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Julie Gicker-Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery. The family invites all friends for lunch and fellowship at the church following the graveside portion of the service. Agnes was born in Greene County to the late Daniel W. Barrow and Sallie Sugg Barrow. The second of eight children, she valued the family ties and work ethic learned while growing up on a farm. She also recognized the importance of education. In June 1951 she graduated from Flora Macdonald College and launched a long teaching career, finding her niche in the earlier grades and special reading programs. This love of teaching forged a strong bond with her husband, Dr. Thurman Elwood Brock, founding president of Craven Community College. Agnes spent many years supporting him in his work and missed him immensely after he passed away in March 2016. Agnes is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Brock of Memphis, Tennessee; two sisters, Thelma Speight of Kinston and Carol Trammel and husband Larry, of Chapel Hill; two brothers, David Barrow and wife Margaret, of Greenville and Drew Barrow and wife Margie, of Snow Hill; four sisters-in-law, Faye Barrow Stewart of Kinston, Carolyn Barrow of La Grange, Nell Harrington of Fayetteville, and Linda Brock of Clayton; one brother-in-law, Kirby Brock of Wade; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband of 53 years, Agnes was preceded in death by one sister, Lindley Roberts and two brothers, Dr. Joe Barrow and Lewis Barrow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to West New Bern Presbyterian Church youth program, 1701 Lucerne Way, New Bern, NC 28560 or to the Thurman E. Brock scholarship endowment through the Craven Community College Foundation, 800 College Court, New Bern, NC 28562. The family wishes to thank Craven County Hospice, special friend Ginger Carrier, and those at Brookdale Assisted Living who showed her special kindness. Arrangements entrusted to Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
