John Christian Bullitt Jr was born in 1872 in Philadelphia, the last of 12 children whose father was the third of 11 born to William Christian Bullitt of Louisville KY, whose father was part of the Kentucky Constitutional Convention in 1792. John Sr graduated from college in 1849, married and moved to Philly to become a prominent lawyer/politician and founder of Fourth Street National Bank housed in the city's first high-rise office building he named after himself. Junior went to the University of Pennsylvania, became a doctor, and lived off his family's money. In the 1910 census John Jr was a physician and a divorced boarder in the home of the Dever family, in a hard-working middle class neighborhood in Norwood, Delaware County. His engagement in May to Edna Dever cause three of his siblings to file an injunction and peition that he be found insane, and another three or four spoke in his defense, but it was mostly about money. His share of his father's estate was to be about $300,000, but his brother was jealous that his mother gave him $35,000 and they squabbled. At age 39 (and within two hours of the verdict announced in his favor) he married Edna Anna Dever, age 18, on February 14, 1911, in Hingham, Massachusetts by one of his supportive brothers, Rev James Bullitt. John practiced medicine in Norwood for a few years but retired because he didn't need the money. He died on October 21, 1925 at age 53, and was buried near his residence in Wayne, PA.
