Over the years he worked at farming, for a period as a chair maker according to the 1880 US census, a teamster in 1885 and a cream gatherer in 1900.
A little note from the Worcester Daily Spy (Worcester, Mass.) April 8, 1886:
Phillipston
Emory S. Bates has sold one of his houses to Freeman Ward.
[Note: Emory S. Bates is the second cousin of Freeman's wife Abbie through the Lamb family.]
Freeman only has one surviving descendant with the surname Ward: a grandson still living in Phillipston. Of the twelve children he and Abbie had together six of those were sons. Three of the males died young. Ralph had a daughter who married. Abbert's only child, Lawrence, died aged 36 without children it is believed. Only Elbridge's son remains.
