To let you know how small a town Phillipston was in 1899 Lillia's marriage record was only 1 of 3 that were recorded in Phillipston's books that year. Only 1 of those 3 weddings was actually IN Phillipston. The Alger's marriage was also recored in Winchendon. Winchendon had 61 marriages recorded in their books for 1899 - the Algers were the last. Nine of the 61 were performed out of town.
She was a member of the former Methodist Church of Phillipston and the Friendly Circle of that church.
Sadly for Lillia she outlived her husband and both children, Myrtle Hanes and Freeman Alger. Freeman died one month before her.
From the Springfield Union Dec. 3, 1949:
Phillipston, Dec. 3 - Mr. and Mrs. Cheney Alger of this town observed their golden wedding anniversary at a reception tonight in town hall. They were married in Winchendon and spent most of their lives here. Mr. Alger, 80, is a retired farmer and his wife, the former Lillia Ward, is 71. They have one son, Freeman, at home; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a daughter, Mrs. Seth Hanes, died a few years ago.
