Mercy was the daughter of Major Daniel Whitehead and Abigail Stevenson, and granddaughter of Daniel Whitehead, one of the Smithtown purchasers of 1650. After her first husband Thomas Betts died in 1709, she married in 1711 Colonel Joseph Sackett, widower of her sister-in-law Elizabeth Betts Sackett.
Mercy and Thomas Betts were the parents of nine children: Richard; Thomas; Daniel; Mercy, married Thomas Hazard; Abigail, married Abraham Springstein; Joanna; Mary; Elizabeth, married Robert Comfort; and Deborah, who married Gershom Moore.
With Joseph Sackett, she had son Samuel in 1712.

In the 20 September 1719 will of Joseph Sackett of Newtown, Queens, Long Island, New York, she was named as wife Mary.
