Della Danziger, 81
May 22, 2003
Della Danziger, 81, who since 1972 has served as executive secretary to six consecutive deans at John Marshall Law School, died of heart failure, Tuesday, May 20, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. The daughter of a well-known Chicago physician, Dr. Willis Silverstein, and his wife, Elsie, Mrs. Danziger grew up in the Austin neighborhood and attended the University of Chicago. She wanted to be a veterinarian but loved animals too much to go through with the required dissections, so she studied psychology instead, earning her degree in 1941. In 1945, she met her future husband, Herman Danziger, at a dance. They were married in 1947 and settled not far from her childhood home. While her sons were young, Mrs. Danziger didn't work outside the home, though she volunteered at a mental health facility and Mt. Sinai Hospital. After the children were grown, however, she joined John Marshall as Dean Noble Lee's secretary. She would work for the school over the next 31 years, endearing herself to students, professors and administrators alike. "She was a sweet, caring, gentle person," said Dean Gilbert Johnston. "There is nobody in the school who didn't like her." At 81, Mrs. Danziger enjoyed her work so much that only recently did she consider retiring. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Steve and Jim; two grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Stone. Services will be held at noon Thursday in Weinstein Family Services Devon Chapel, 1300 W. Devon Ave., Chicago.
