Gustav was born in Germany. By 1850 he was living in Cincinnati, Ohio, and on 15 Sep 1856 he married Matilda Eschmann. They had ten children: William, Gustavus, Robert, Amelia, Julia, Gustave, Harry, Samuel, Edward, and Freda. Gustav was a Union Civil War Officer. He served with the 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Companies D and E. He was mustered in as a 1st Lieutenant. Gustav contracted some type of throat infection or disease during the war and it afflicted him the rest of his life. He finally decided to end the torment and he committed suicide due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. (A special thanks to John Reusing for information contributed concerning Gustav's throat injury and subsequent suicide.)

Although his name does not appear on the family monument, Spring Grove Cemetery interment records indicate that he is buried in the family plot.
