William Bee appears to be the oldest son of John Bee and Sarah Marchant. Like his brothers and sisters, he was born in Northleach, Gloucestershire, England. As a young man, in a time when the class system was in effect, William had little choice in occupations, and was relegated to pursuing the work of his father; a carpenter. As a youth, he likely spent many of his formative years laboring with his father, learning the family trade.

Northleach was / is an ancient city, dating back to 780 AD, was / is located in a valley by the River Leach. This river is tributary of the larger River Thames. In the middle ages, the town prospered as a strategic center for the wool trade and coach travel. It must have been an exciting world for a young man.

William married Martha Thorton, also of Northleach, in 1834. She was the daughter of William and Martha Thornton. William Thornton (1770-abt. 1826) died before his daughter married, so the young couple moved in with her mother, Martha (1771-aft. 1851).

William Bee continued to ply his trade, joined a guild, and eventually became locally known as a master carpenter (building contractor).

Martha and William only had one child that thrived, William George, better known as “George”. William George, Sr., passed away when his son was about 16 years old. His wife received an annuity, likely from the guild, and George continued in the family tradition as a carpenter and a joiner. A carpenter that could build a house from the ground up and a joiner (artisan) that could produce windows, stairs, cabinets, furniture…..
