John Caldwin Shelton was the sixth (or 7th/8th according to the records you use) of 8-10 children born to James William Shelton Sr. and Rachel Sauerman.

At the age of seven John lost his father who, fighting for the Maryland infantry on the Union side, gave his life in the Battle of Five Forks near Battletown, Virginia on 1 Apr 1865.

At the age of 13 in 1871 his mother moved the family to Marshall County in Iowa where he remained a resident for the remainder of his life. His eldest brother Thomas decided to remain in Maryland and lived out the rest of his life there.

John married Eliza Jane Waltz 11 Sep 1881 in Marshall County and made his living as a farmer.

Their marriage brought seven children into this world; Ralph Edward, Benjamin T, Rosa May, Vernie (died shortly after birth), Bessie Inez, Nellie Eva, and Lela Mayme.

Eliza passed away in 1917 and four years later John married a local teacher, Lottie M Totman, to whom he was married for eleven years until his death from cancer of the esophagus.

He was survived by his wife, children, brothers and sisters and many grandchildren.
