Joseph Hooker Shelton was the youngest of all his siblings. He lost his father to the Civil War when he was almost 2 years old and at age 8, his mother relocated their family from Fredrick County in Maryland to Marshall County in Iowa.

He was called to duty for the Spanish-American War but it appears his unit never was never utilized.

Joseph never married and was a regular at the Shelton family reunions. Remembered as a striking man, Joseph lived to a ripe old age working as a farmer's hand and farmer for most of his life.
