Brennan, Retired Army Col. William F.

Retired Army Col. William F. Brennan, age 86, a resident of Manitowoc, died on Saturday, October 21, 2017 after a short illness at Rivers Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc..

Col. Brennan was born October 30, 1930 in Valders, WI, son of the late John and Tillie Brennan. He attended Valders High School and graduated with the class of 1948. Bill was an outstanding athlete while attending high school earning 9 letters in football, basketball and track. He graduated Salutatorian of the class and received the coveted Honor Key as the outstanding graduate of the class.

Bill attended Ripon College and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Economics. Enrolled in the ROTC program, he was one of 4 cadets receiving a regular Army commission upon graduation. He was an outstanding football player while at Ripon and was selected all Midwest Conference as a fullback and a linebacker in both his junior and senior years. In 1950 he scored 5 touchdowns in one game which remains a Ripon College record. He was selected to the Lakeshore Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

He married the former Helen Kuhn on September 17, 1955 at Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Manitowoc and had 5 children.

His outstanding military career consisted of a tour in Korea during the combat years serving with the 25th Infantry Division. Prior to that he attended the Basic Officer course as a 2nd Lt in 1952 at Ft. Benning, GA. His next assignment was with the 36th Dixie Division at Camp Attenbury, IN.

Upon returning from Korea he was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Riley, KS. After a brief stay at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital as a patient, he was assigned to St. Louis, MO to work with the Reserve units as an advisor.

In 1957 he attended the Advanced Officer course at Ft. Benning, GA. In 1958 he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning. He was selected as the Senior Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of the Division which took Bill and his family to Karachi Pakistan from 1960-1963 where he was assigned to the American Embassy.

His next assignment was with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC. Bill had a short period off of active duty and during this period he commanded the Army Reserve Unit in Manitowoc. In 1970 he returned to active duty and attended the Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. Subsequent assignment was with the 5th Army Headquarters duty station at Ft. Sheridan, IL. He was promoted to full Colonel in 1974.

His many decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Army Commendation Ribbon with Cluster, Parachute Wings, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and several other unit and individual awards.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Helen, children Farrell, Tim, Casey, Bridget and Tara, multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is proceded in death by his parents John and Tillie Brennan, sisters Beatrice, Dorothy and Marilyn and brother Col. John Brennan.

Bill belonged to the Retired Officers Association, Pinecrest Village and was a former member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Manitowoc Elks Club and the Manitowoc Eagles Club. Bill was an active member of the YMCA.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Grand, 1416 Grand Avenue, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mark Mleziva. Cremation will follow at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel with burial of the cremated remains to be at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc at a later date. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 from 4p.m. to 7 p.m. The visitation will continue on Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Grand from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Otto Oas Post #659 at the church immediately following the funeral service.
