Mr. Johnny Hartwell Baxter, age 87, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 surrounded by his family. He was born on August 26, 1918 in Paulding County, Dallas, Georgia, son of the late Elmer F. and Lillie Mae (Tant) Baxter. He was a WWII veteran, a mechanic by trade and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Violet M. Baxter; his children, Patricia (Ray) Compton, Larry (Marilyn) Baxter, Richard (Muriel) Baxter, Gary M. Baxter and Debra (Frankie) Eberly; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and one special cousin, Aira Young of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Lillie Baxter; a son, Harold Edward Baxter; a daughter, Barbara Ann Nunnally; three sisters, Irene C. Freeman, Katie Elizabeth Bates, Margaret Ann Gravley; his brothers, twins, Hoyt and Roy Baxter who died as infants and Elmer Junior Baxter.

Many thanks for the special care given to our loved one from the staff at McGuire Veterans Hospital. Special thanks to nurses, Norma and Mary Jo, and Dr. Panebianco for the care and thoughtfulness they showed to our father and his family during his illness.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 20, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel, where funeral services will be held on Friday, July 21, 2006 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
