Mr. Abel James Byrd
Mr. Abel James Byrd, a retired farmer and highly esteemed citizen of Keller, died at the home of his son, Dr. G. Bentley Byrd, Norfolk, Va., Tuesday, May 25th, aged seventy-seven years. His death was sudden, being stricken as he talked to a friend.
He was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church all his life and at one time was a member of the Board of Stewards. Mr. Byrd possessed so many qualities of the rarest and noblest Christian manhood that no man in the Keller neighborhood was better known, or more respected than he. His cheerfulness, uniform courtesy, wholesome optimism and untiring faithfulness endeared him to all.
His remains were brought to Keller and funeral services were held at Oak Grove Church, Thursday afternoon, May 27th, conducted by Rev. H. K. Swann and Rev. H. M. Nichols and burial was n the Mears burying ground. The active pallbearers were Otho Mears, Carlton Drummond, Dorsey Mears, Dave Mears, Brooks Mapp and Dr. R. J. White. The honorary pallbearers were George T. Parker, Louis Drummond, Hugh Benson, Fred Mears, George T. Hyslup, Frank Hyslup, H. L. Eichelberger, Robert Bradford, Harold Turner, John Colonna, F. A. Downing, Hall Richardson, Elijah Chance, Alfred Edmonds, Walter Mapp, Ernest Wescott, W. J. Mapp, Levin Nock David, R. H. Elmore and G. T. Stockley.
Mr. Byrd is survived by two sons, Austin J. Byrd, of Keller, and Dr. G. Bentley Byrd, of Norfolk, and one brother, W. E. Byrd, of Keller.
