Ruth Borden Embree was born in 1908 to Charles Seymour Borden and Mina Blanche Shaw Borden. She was the youngest of two children who grew up in the South Shore of Chicago. She married her high school sweetheart Henry (Hank) S. Embree. She and Hank exchanged 1926 graduation photo's and she wrote on the photo: “I’m thinking of a very dear boy who has done much towards making my life happy." On the back of the photo it says: “Hank dear: You have given me the sweetest and dearest thing a girl could ever have, the friendship of an ideal boy. In the past two years we’ve been together you have always been loyal, true and most thoughtful. It is my desire to always be worthy of such affection and try to reciprocate what you have done for me.” They would marry four years later and raise three wonderful children, while having a fourth child die as an infant.
