Wes was the eldest of four children, and grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. He graduated Argentine High School in KCKS (Class of 1965). He earned his college degrees - Bachelor of Science in Business (1969), Masters of Science in Organization and Administration (1972), and PhD in Higher Education (1974) - all from the University of Kansas.
Wes was a Vietnam War veteran (US Army). While in the Army, he married his first wife, Susan Kathryn Duggins, on December 22, 1969. Susie predeceased him on April 25, 2002.
Professionally, Wes was worked in higher education administration: Assistant Provost (1974-1975) and Associate Dean (1975-1976) at Park College School for Community Education (Kansas City, Missouri); Vice President (1976-1990) of Western Nebraska Community College (Scottsbluff, Nebraska); President (1990-1997) of Belmont College (St. Clairsville, Ohio); and President (1997-2004) of Klamath Community College (Klamath Falls, Oregon).
After his retirement in early 2004, Wes moved to Sun City West, Arizona. On June 26, 2004, Wes and Deborah Joy (Tomasch) Hecht were married in Sun City West at Briarwood Country Club. Wes and Deborah enjoyed an active retirement life. Wes was an avid golfer and competed in hickory (wood shafted) golf tournaments; he was active with The Prides as well as several other organizations including the Metal, Boomer's, and Zymurgy clubs. Wes was a gourmet amateur chef, created a family cookbook, and his special hobby was making his own sausage.
Wes is survived by his wife, Deborah Joy (Tomasch) [Hecht] Channell, daughter Erin Channell of Kansas City Missouri, sisters and brother-in-laws Jan & Dan Ritter of Stilwell, Kansas and Ruth & Greg French of Sun City West; stepson and daughter-in-law Joel & Sandra Hecht of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was predeceased by his parents, younger brother William George Channell, and his first wife, Susan Kathryn (Duggins) Channell.
Wes donated his body to medical science; and subsequent to cremation, his ashes will be scattered by family and friends.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. However, the family suggests donations to local Sun City West charities: The Prides, Helping Hands, and the Community Fund.
