Howard C. Slayton, 81, of Leon, died Saturday, April 7, 2007 peacefully at his home with his family and under hospice care. He was born on June 7, 1925 in Sparta, WI to Charles and Victoria (Larson) Slayton. He attended schools in Leon and Sparta and graduated from Sparta High School in 1943.

He married Mary Jeanette Meier of Bangor on November 27, 1948. He farmed in the Leon area his entire life.
Howard was a member of the board for the Township of Leon, Sparta Rural Firefighters, Leon Cemetery Association, Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bike Museum, Sparta Cooperative, and Leon School Board.

He loved the outdoors. He was a hunter and a fisherman. He loved to play cards and cut wood. He attended all the basketball and volleyball games of his granddaughters. He was a good neighbor and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Slayton of Leon; two daughters, Beth (Andy Berendes) Slayton of Sparta and Barb (Fred) Nicolai of Glendale Heights, IL; four grandchildren, Adam (Julie) Nicolai and Morgan Nicolai of IL, Megan and Kaitlin Flock of Sparta; a great grandchild, Xander Howard Nicolai of IL; his sister, Beverly (Harold) Schluenz of Madison, WI; his brother, Richard Slayton of CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Marie Madsen and Verna Hagen; his brothers, Elwood Slayton and Donald Slayton.

Memorial services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend Dean Staffason officiating. Burial will be in Leon Cemetery, Leon, WI.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gundersen Lutheran Hospice Care, First Congregational Church of Leon Building Fund, or the Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bike Museum.

The Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with arrangements.
