Mother of Astronaut, Dies
SPARTA - Mrs. C h a r l e s
S l a y t o n , 75, Rt. 3, Sparta,
mother of one of the first astro-
nauts, died Saturday (Mar. 14,
1970) in a Sparta hospital after
a long illness.
Her son, D o n a l d (Deke),
Houston, Tex., was one of the
original seven Mercury astro-
nauts and is currently director
of flight crew training for all
Apollo astronauts.
The former Victoria Larson
was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Slayton once called the
day Donald was named an as-
tronaut "my worst day," but
she never tried to stand in his
way.
He was scheduled in 1962 to
be the second American to orbit
the Earth, but his mission was
cancelled because he had a
heart condition.
Slayton is the only one of the
original astronauts who was
never able to go into space.
Surviving in addition to Don-
ald are her husband, Charles;
two daughters, Mrs. H a r o l d
Schluenz, 3614 Sargent St.; and
Mrs. Milton Madsen, 330 Russell
St.; three other sons, Elwood,
2901 R i m r o c k Rd.; Howard,
Sparta; and Richard, Newport
beach, Calif.; a step daughter,...
