SPARTA — Charles S. Slayton, 84, Rt. 3, Sparta, father of one of the original astronauts, died Friday (Sept. 29, 1972) in a hospital after a long illness.
His son, Donald (Deke) Slayton, Houston, Tex., was one of the seven Mercury Program astronauts and is currently director of flight operations for the National aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
MR. SLAYTON was born in
the Town of Leon. His wife, the
former Edith Friske, died in
1920. He married Victoria Lar-
son in 1923. She died in 1970.
He was a retired farmer and
served for many years as treas-
urer of the Town of Leon.
