Daniel J. McQuagge had the privilege of growing up on a large plantation, with much of his land running alongside the beautiful Chipola River. However, his life would change with the onset of the War Between the States. Severely wounded (in the jaw) at the Battle of Chancellorsville, this young veteran would return to Jackson County to spend the remainder of his life.
In 1866, Daniel J. McQuagge married Susan Mary Haynes, the daughter of Ephraim C. Haynes and Nancy M. Gay Haynes. They raised a large family through the difficult post war years and their "Florida Cracker " house, though in shambles is still standing in this year of 2002.
Daniel J. McQuagge died on May 15, 1906 and is buried at Bright Prospect Cemetery, in Marianna, Jackson County, Florida.
