Her father Daniel A. McQuagge and his family moved from North Carolina to near the newly developed city of Marianna, Florida, and was a pioneer settler there. After his first wife died (Mary's mother), Daniel married Amy Jones, a daughter of Dr. Jonathan Jones, in 1830. In the summer of 1845 pastor T. G. Gilmore married Daniel's oldest daughter Mary in Walton County, but he referred to her as being "of Marianna". They met while he was a minister in Eucheeanna and they eventually moved to Texas.
