Jonathan enlisted March 5, 1862 at Montgomery, AL. The 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Talladega, 16 March 1862, with men from Calhoun, Cherokee, Montgomery, Randolph, Shelby, and Talladega counties.
Jonathan W. McQuagge was captured twice during the Civil War. The first time was at Vicksburg when he signed the parole on July 9, 1963 until properly exchanged. A year after this release he was captured again at Big Shanty, GA on June 15, 1864. This time he was eventually sent from Louisville to Rock Island Prison on June 24, 1864 where he died Oct. 10, 1864 most probably from the smallpox epidemic there or from pneumonia.
He was a carpenter by trade and left behind a wife of 9 years and a two year old son. After his wife remarried, she relocated to Texas with her new husband James Lee and her son. Most of the McQuagges in Texas are decendants of his son Duncan S. McQuagge through his grandsons Arthur Duncan McQuagge Sr and Ollie Samuel McQuagge
