Gene D. Evenson, 78, of 18536 U.S. Highway 151, Valders, died on May 13, 2011 at Calumet Medical Center in Chilton.

The funeral was on Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Valders. Officiating was the Rev. Jim Rasmus with entombment at Knollwood Mausoleum in Manitowoc County. Military rites were accorded by the American Legion Thompson-Burkard Post 28 of Valders.

Gene was born on December 23, 1932 in Valders, son of the late Bennett and Myrna Damm Evenson. He was a 1950 graduate of Valders High School. Gene also was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. On November 10, 1956 he married the former Veronica Schuh in Illinois. Gene was employed with Manitowoc Shipbuilding and with the Manitowoc Company for more than 40 years. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, National Trappers Association and the American Legion Thompson-Burkard Post 28 of Valders.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica Evenson of Valders; four children and their spouses, Vicki and Lee Wetenkamp of Manitowoc, Cindy Evenson of Cottonwood,, Ariz., Wendy Evenson of Lakewood, Colo., and Rick and Bev Evenson of Cato; six grandchildren, Corey and Noelle Evenson of Manitowoc, Brock Wetenkamp and his fiancee, Jennifer Nickels of Manitowoc, Nick Evenson of Manitowoc, Tyler Wetenkamp of Manitowoc, Tessa Evenson of Cato and Chase Evenson of Lakewood, Colo.; two great grandchildren, Lilly and Levi Evenson. He is further survived by three sisters, Betty Jeske of Manitowoc, Joyce Wiegert of Valders and Virginia Meyer of Valders; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Marlyn and Margaret Evenson of Valders, Dennis and Marlene Evenson of Valders, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Milt and Helen Vraney of Manitowoc, Norb Schuh of Valders, Dorothy Schaikowski of Milwaukee, Seb and Karen Schuh of Cato, Bill and Kathy Schuh of Valders, Dan Meyer of Valders and Judy Evenson of Valders. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers-in-law, Ruby and Bud Meyer, June Meyer, Ted Jeske, Bob Meyer and Bill Wiegert; two brothers, Donald and Roger Evenson; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Helen and Joseph Schuh; a sister-in-law and three brothers-in-law, Georgia Etringer, Ron Schaikowski, Joseph and Nicholas Schuh and three nephews, Jay Meyer, Craig Meyer and Wally Evenson.

Memorials may be made in Gene's name to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
