Lottie Yarnell Hanby was born on September 5, 1885, in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Etta Jane Mask Hanby. She was listed in New Castle County, Delaware, birth records in 1885, number 17734.

Lottie had one sister, Martha Clayton Hanby born on February 1, 1889, in Wilmington, Delaware. Martha Hanby and Frederick Clark Ditmars were married on November 8, 1916, in Washington, DC. He was born on July 24, 1885, in Brooklyn, New York. He and Martha Hanby lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and may not have had children. Frederick Hanby died in February 1976 in Philadelphia, but it is not known where he was buried. Martha Clayton Ditmars died on July 26, 1959.

In the 1900 Federal census, her parents B Frank Hanby, aged 36; Etta J Hanby, aged 35; her sister Martha C Hanby, aged 11; and Lottie, aged 14, were living in Wilmington, Delaware. B Frank Hanby was employed as an upholsterer.

In 1902, Lottie Yarnell Hanby married William Herman Smith. They had three daughters: Helena Mask Smith, born in 1904 in Washington, DC; Martha, who was born about 1905 and may have died in that year; and Katheryn Elizabeth Smith, born in 1907, who went on to become the famous singer Kate Smith.

According to the 1910 Federal census, William Smith, aged 29, and Lottie Smith were living with their family in Washington, DC. William Smith was listed as a wholesale news dealer. According to Wikipedia (from the article on his daughter Kate Smith), he was the owner of Capital News Company, which distributed newspapers and magazines in the greater DC area. Lottie herself was listed as a spouse, and perhaps was a full-time wife and mother at home.

They were still living in Washington, DC, according to the 1920 Federal census. William Smith was aged 39; Lottie Y Smith (spelt Lattie) was 34. Helen Smith was aged 16; "Cathrine" was 11 years old.

In the 1930 Federal census, taken on April 9 and 10, 1930, Lottie Y Smith, aged 45, married and listed as the head of house, was living with her daughters Helena M Smith, aged 25; and Kathryn E Smith, aged 22, at 157 New York Ave, Washington, DC. They were renting their home. William Smith seems to have been living elsewhere in the 1930 Federal Census, in which he was listed as divorced.

William Hermann Smith died on June 20, 1930. His obituary listed Lottie Hanby Smith as his spouse.

In the 1940 Federal census, Lottie Smith was living with her daughter Helena M Smith, aged 35, and Lee J Steene, aged 30, in Arlington, Virginia.

Lottie Smith's father Benjamin Franklin Hanby died on January 23, 1946, in Arlington. Virginia. He and his wife were listed in the 1920 Federal census living in Washington, DC; and in the 1940 Federal census in Riverdale, Maryland. His Virginia death certificate indicated that he was buried about January 24, 1946, in Washington, DC, but no cemetery was indicated. It is not yet known when Etta Mask Hanby died or is buried.

Lottie's sister Martha C Hanby married Frederick C Ditmars, and died on July 26, 1959, in Upper Dublin, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. She was buried at George Washington Memorial Park, Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on July 29 1959.

Charlotte Yarnell Hanby Smith died on February 24, 1962, at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut, while visiting her daughter Mrs. Helene Steene. Obituaries were published in the Hartford Courant (Hartford, Connecticut); and the Bridgeport Post and Bridgeport Telegram (Bridgeport, Connecticut) on February 25 and 26, 1962.

Charlotte Smith had been living for several years in New York City, New York. She had also lived in Memphis, Tennessee, as well as Washington, DC, after the death of her husband William H. Smith, who died in 1930. She had been in ill-health for the past several years, and suffered a stroke while visiting Mrs. Steene.

Her daughter Kate Smith flew by plane on February 23, 1962, from Palm Beach, Florida to be at her mother's bedside. Kate Smith was quoted in the February 25, 1962 (page 4) edition of the Hartford Courant of her mother, "The family has lost its most precious possession."

Survivors were her daughters Mrs. Helena Steene and Kate Smith, as well as several grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on February 26, 1962, at the Henry E Bishop and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev William W. Ross officiating. Another service took place at the S H Hines funeral home in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, February 28, 1962. Burial was at the Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Washington.

Note: A Charlotte Smith, born on October 1, 1872 and died on December 7, 1962, is also buried in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Find a Grave memorial 174841509. This is NOT the mother of Kate Smith. There is a State of Virginia death certificate for the subject of this memorial which shows that she was the daughter of Henry and Margaret Turpen Dotson, and the wife of Ebid Smith. This Charlotte Smith was born in North Carolina.
